Telling the Fam

Yep, this is the same day that we got the first u/s. We tried to think of ways where we could tell our family in a cool way (well, we thought about it for 2 seconds), but just wanted to tell them as soon as possible. We called my parents first because I didn't think my dad would be home and I was just calling to confirm that with my mom. Whem my mom answered I could hear my dad in the background. I told Jeff that I was scared...we were both nervous to say it out loud. Anyway, I eventually asked my mom if she and daddy would take a trip to Raleigh in April. She said that she'd think about it. I then asked her if they'd come if they had a new grandbaby. I don't think she said another word...she was crying and couldn't breathe. Then daddy got on the phone and we all three talked about the first few weeks of the pregnancy.

Next we called Sandy and Denny, but they weren't home! Jeff left a msg for them to call back because he had a question.

Then we called Jennifer because mama said she was going to wait by the phone because she knew she'd call her after we got off the phone. Jenn wasn't feeling well, so I told her that I hadn't been feeling well for the past few weeks. She figured out why and was also excited. Mama said that she was calling all of her friends right after we got off of the phone :-)

Next we called Grandmother. She was easy to tell because she asks about "Shanna Jr." or "Little PC" (prince charming) almost everytime we talk. She didn't seem that surprised. When I asked her about it she said that she knew the baby was coming soon. She must have received a message from the gods...

JoAnn was excited and we talked about the delivery date and how she and Grandmother would have to have their bags packed for the drive to Raleigh.

Sandy and Denny called back and Jeff chatted with Sandy for a few minutes before he said, "Well, not really a question...Shanna's pregnant." haha. Then I heard Jeff's end of the conversation telling Sandy how I was feeling. Denny said they had been waiting patiently for a grandchild for awhile now.

Bryan was more excited than I thought he would be! It's neat because he can give ME tips on parenting since he's doing such a good job with little Wesley.

We didn't get to Scott until the next day. Jeff talked to him first, but said he sounded busy and so he didn't tell him. I called him later that day and told him that he'd be an uncle. He said that it will be his job to teach the kid jokes.

I told Mom and Pop at different times because Pop was traveling back to Jonesboro. Mom told me that when she was pregnant she craved vienna sausages, saltine crackers and coca-colas.

First Ultrasound

We decided to participate in the UNC study so that we could get an u/s today. I always thought that I'd be emotional the first time we heard the heartbeat, but not even close. It was so AMAZING that all I could do was stare at the screen. Jeff was awe struck as well. Technology is cool. Here is a picture:

The baby's heartbeat was 152. An old wives' tale is that if it is above 140 then it is a girl! Howeverrrr, I'm craving salty foods, which is a sure sign for a boy. Guess we'll have to wait another couple of months to know for sure....

First Midwife Visit

Today was our first pregnancy appointment with Mary Charles. I have seen her twice before for checkups, but this was Jeff's first time to meet her. I loved the way she introduded herself to him and explained to her the difference between a doctor and a midwife. Then we went through the 100 questions they have to ask you about medical history..blah, blah, blah. She said that the first u/s wouldn't be until week 20!!, but that we could do a study through UNC that allowed you to get an early 1st trimester u/s. We're going to think about it. The reason I want to is because everyone is just taking my word for it that I'm pregnant. I want to see or hear something more! They didn't even do a test at the appointment today.

Jeff had the option of staying in the room for the exam...but chose to flip through all of the Mothering magazines in the lobby instead.

We told Tyson the big news, but I don't think he gets it yet.
