Bradley Birth - Class #9

Last night's class was on Postpartum Preparation and Relaxation Practice (my favorite). The first hour we just talked about things that can be expected for the first six weeks after delivery. The discussion was related to the parents, both physically and emotionally, and not really the baby.

Most of the second half of the class we practiced relaxation. We played a game where Laura handed out an index card to the mom's that instructed them to do a particular thing wrong during the practice contraction. The game was that the dad had to guess what the mom was doing wrong. The first round I was told to keep my eyes open. It's pretty hard to breathe deeply and relax with your eyes open, so Jeff noticed (with a hint) that this is what I was doing wrong. The second round I was told to clench my fists during the practice contraction. Jeff got this easy. The third round all mom's were told to do everything right. All of the dad's were tricked. It was a good exercise because it helped Jeff to be aware of signs of tension.

The last thing that we did was a relaxation technique called the Rainbow Technique. Laura dimmed the lights and read us a story in which we were to imagine ourselves by a mountain lake, sitting on a dock, listening to the waves crash on the shore, listening to the birds chirp, etc. It's called the Rainbow Technique because she used colors to describe all of the things you see while sitting by the lake - a red bird, a green tree, blue water, pink sunset, etc. I thought it was going to be silly at first, but it really did help me to relax if I focused on the color of the surroundings. She also played a tape of a mountain stream with birds chirping, and Jeff was massaging my shoulders, so that didn't hurt.

Next week we will talk about Advanced First Stage Techniques. Tonight we tour the hospital.

Baby Shower in Raleigh

This weekend was wonderful! Our great friends Erin and Holly threw us (me) a shower in Raleigh. In addition to this, Sandy was able to fly in for the weekend to attend the shower and spend some time with us before the baby is born.

Erin and Holly hosted the shower at a cute little restaurant that has a girly gift shop upstairs and the main dining area downstairs. They sat us upstairs, so we had privacy and were surrounded by all the fun gifts. It was exciting to see all of my friends in one place. Again, I left the shower feeling so loved and lucky to have such special friends that are so thoughtful and sweet.

Holly and Erin, thank you so much for throwing the shower! It was perfect.

You curl?

My bad last week. What can I say, I'm a blog slacker. I slack on the blogging. It's just who I am, what I do.

Shanna is doing great and all her measurements are on track. The nursery is coming along slowly, but I think we'll have it ready in a couple weeks, at which time we will post some pics. The doodoo brown color that we chose for the walls looks really good. After we finished painting, we noticed that it matched this Baby Gap bag that we have almost perfectly. Completely unintentional and not necessarily cool, but I think it validates the color as baby compatible, which ultimately means that I won't have to repaint it.

My mom is in town for Shanna's baby shower on Saturday. I'm playing some golf as it's supposed to be really nice tomorrow. Other than that, I'm not sure what's on tap for the weekend. If nothing else, I've got The 40 Year-Old Virgin from Netflix and I've heard good things.

Has anyone been watching the curling matches in the Winter Olympics this year? Is it just me or do these guys take themselves way too seriously? I really think I could start training in a couple of years and be an Olympic curler for the 2010 Games. From what I can tell there are three essential skills required to be a champion curler: 1) sliding a rock while appearing to concentrate as if you are performing brain surgery, 2) yelling "HARD" as loud as humanly possible in a Canadian accent - regardless of what country you are from , and 3) scrubbing the floor. I guess #3 requires the most athletic ability, but calling these guys athletes would be like calling professional bass fishermen athletes. And any sport where previous experience as a janitor gives you an advantage is not really a sport is it? So yeah, I'm going to crack open some Budweiser and play some shuffleboard - Vancouver 2010 here I come.

Bradley Birth - Class #8

Last night's class was not that fun because it focused on the variations and complications that we may experience during the labor and delivery. It was a good class for me because it made me realize that I need to be a little more open-minded about the way our birth experience could unfold. My mom had three easy, short deliveries and her mom had five kids, one of which I think was born in an elevator. I'm just assuming that I've inherited these genes. The bottom line, however, is that everyone wants for the baby to be healthy, so if we have to deviate from our birth "plan" it will be okay. I think it's kind of tricky to think positively about the birth experience and to work on being ready for something to go differently than what we imagine.

Another hard thing about last night was that a couple that is due a week before us may have to have a c-section soon because her amniotic fluid is low. The baby can easily be perfectly healthy if delivered at 34 weeks, but it's just different than they had planned...way different. I dreamed last night that we were going into labor. We were so excited, but then the contractions stopped and I realized that in my dream we still had a month to go, so it was good that they stopped. When I woke up this morning I realized that I shouldn't take for granted that our pregnancy has been easy so far, and pay a little more attention to getting good sleep and not going, going, going all the time.

Mother Nature screwed up the way a woman feels her last month of pregnancy....nesting that makes you want to clean and "get things ready" along with getting up twice to pee in the middle of the night.....doesn't leave much room for good rest. OR, maybe she is smarter that I think and is just preparing us for sleepless nights....

33 Weeks Appointment

We had our second appointment with our new practice. We met with a midwife named Jill, who was great and we both liked. We have two more midwives to rotate through to make sure we see all four before the baby arrives. Our next appointment is in two weeks, and then we'll go every week for the last month (wow, the last month got here fast).

My b/p was 112/66 and my belly is measuring on track. They tested my iron levels and said that it is still a little low. It should be around 12, but was at 11.2 before and 10.9 now. Jill said it wasn't a big deal and to just try taking my iron supplement completely alone, instead of with my prenatal, which contains a small amout of calcium (blocks iron absorption).

Jill was feeling for the position of the baby when she pushed kind of hard on my lower abdomen to see if she could feel his head. She jumped back a little and laughed, saying that she must have grabbed his hand because she got punched. Today his head is down and his back and bottom push against my belly while his feet hang out on my right side.

I'm working from home this afternoon...about to take a 30 min nap with Tyson...

Pediatrician

We are checking "find a pediatrician" off of our list of baby to-do's. Yesterday after work we had an open house type meeting with a group practice. We were both happy with the two doctors that we met with and what they told us about the rest of their practice. We went in with a list of questions, but the little binder they gave us, along with their introductions, answered nearly all of them. I guess they have seen the list of questions on the internet.

They told us that the hospital will call them when our baby is born so that they know to come and check him out. We asked how we "sign up" with them so that they are expecting the call. Their response was that we don't have to do anything until the baby is born and the hospital initiates everything. Kind of funny that they just get surprise calls everyday that they have a new customer.

Tomorrow we have our 2nd appointment with the new midwife practice and our 8th Bradley Class.

Weekend of Baby

This weekend was devoted to the baby. It was perfect because Jeff got some golf in on the beautiful Friday that we had, and we ran errands on Saturday and Sunday when it was "wintry mix" snowing all day (who wants to run errands when it's gorgeous and sunny?).

Saturday morning started at 9am sharp with a Newborn Basics class at the hospital. We spent most of the time learning how to sponge bathe a newborn, which is apparently a lot more time consuming than we imagined. We only had one "baby", so we elected Jeff to be the one to go through the motions. We were both tired after class, and the baby didn't move or make a peep the whole 2 hours. Other things that we covered were how to change the diaper, take temperature, and how to swaddle. Overall it was a good use of a couple of hours.

After that we went to Babies R Us, since it was close to where we took the class, and we had a few big items to pick up. Again, kind of a mad house, so we were glad to be in and out of there.

Finally, after a little nap, we (Jeff) got serious about painting. He finished on Sunday and we are both very happy with the way it turned out. It feels good to have that finished. Now we just have to put together all of the furniture that we have laying around in boxes. It's fun to make progress and have the room get closer to being ready for Baby Schrades.

(Monday Weight: Up 1 lb from last Monday for a total of 24).

Thursday, February 16, 2006

Just this past week, in my opinion, we reached the stage of looking and feeling really pregnant. My belly is tight in maternity shirts that used to fit loosely, you can see where my belly button is (although not an outy yet), and I may have the beginnings of a slight waddle.

Yesterday at the gym I was about to pick up some 10lb weights (not heavy) and the girl next to me offered to get them for me. Then at the grocery store I dropped a few pennies on the floor and another customer rushed over to pick them up for me (I told her to just leave them for the kids, but she insisted).

The books say Baby Schrades is now a little over 19 inches long and weighs a little over 4 lbs. I can tell he's gotten bigger because he is putting a little pressure on my ribs. I really can't imagine how big and heavy he will feel when he gains a few more lbs, but the bigger he gets the easier it is to feel him move, which is still so cool. Most of the time we can feel something hard right under my rib cage, which we think is the small of his back (??). And then we'll usually feel what we think is a knee or a foot brush the surface a few times a day.

This week feels like spring in Raleigh, but of course this weekend the high is 40 and it will be rainy. Jeff can hopefully play some golf tomorrow before he starts painting the nursery on Saturday. Sandy is coming next weekend and we want her to see it painted.....

Bradley Birth - Class #7

Last night's class was on how to create a Birth Plan, or how to write down your birth preferences for your midwife/doctor and hospital staff. Things to include on it are subjects such as: IV (whether you want an IV or a heploc that allows you to move around), fetal monitoring (continuous or intermittent), what you plan to wear during the delivery (hospital gown or your own), medication, ability to walk around, getting in tub, who will cut the cord, medication for the baby post delivery, when the baby will be bathed, and circumcision. Basically you can write down anything that is important to you. Laura recommended keeping it to one page.

One thing that we took from the class was that the baby has about a two hour window of alertness immediately after he is born, so that's why many people choose to just hold the baby during this time. I noticed in some of the sample birth plans that a lot of people ask to delay the eye drops, vitamin K shot, and the first bath for a couple of hours so that they can just bond with the baby.

Another point Laura made last night was that you should create a list of your preferences, but don't get upset if the delivery doesn't go exactly the way you planned it...because it probably won't. This fits with next week's topic of "Variations and Complications" in which will discuss how to cope if things don't go the way you have planned.

Baby Shower

This weekend my sister and Heather hosted a baby shower in Atlanta. I'm a little overwhelmed with "warm fuzzies" that Baby Schrades, Jeff and I are so loved. Jennifer is 5 months pregnant and Heather has two young kids, so for them to even throw the shower means so much to us. Everyone that came to the shower had either a really long drive or kids at home (including dogs), but busy weekends either way, so we really appreciate them spending a few hours to celebrate the upcoming arrival of our little guy.

Some of the things that Baby Schrades got from our friends and family was a Georgia Tech Mobile, Georgia Tech outfits, thermometers, bottles, handmade blankets, toys, wash rags, a sleeper/bassinet for our room, diapers, lotion/shampoo, mattress, and tons and tons of clothes. We're very lucky because, in addition to the cute new outfits, we have family on both sides that have little boys and are happy to pass down their clothes. Baby Schrades may now have all of the clothes he needs for the first year!

Again, thank you very much to everyone who was involved in the shower - especially Jennifer and Heather.

Eight weeks to go

We have T-minus eight weeks until Baby Schrades arrives. Are we ready?

Mentally? Yes. Logistically? Not really. I think we have learned enough in our Bradley class to deliver Baby Schrades if he were to come tomorrow (Shanna might not agree with that). But it would probably be a little stressful as we haven't really learned when to know that it's time to leave for the hospital. I know that if you see a head popping out, then it's too late to get in the car. On the other hand, you don't want to be a spaz and show up at the hospital after the first contraction.

Also, if he were to come tomorrow, he wouldn't have a finished nursery. The main obstacle there is going to be painting the walls, which I think we are going to do next week. I'm really looking forward to that. It's been about two weeks since I painted the attic, and I'm having withdrawal... We are also awaiting delivery of the crib, which should arrive close to the due date.

As far as baby supplies, I think we are close to having what we need (even though I really haven't gotten all the different pads and bouncers straight in my head). In the baby clothes department, I think we're set. In fact, Baby Schrades might be able to wear a different outfit every hour for his first 3 months.

The next Bradley class in on creating a birth plan... we'll keep you posted.

Two More Months

Baby Schrades is due on Sunday, April 9th, which is eight weeks from this coming up Sunday. Today, however, feels like a milestone because it is February 9th. Either way you look at it, the little guy will be here in about two months!

First Appointment with New Practice

It was WONDERFUL! Jeff and I both have a good feeling about this new practice, the midwives and the hospital. Today we met with one of the four midwives, Kim. The first thing she did was spend 15 min with us going over our records and telling us about their practice. She said that they are open to anything we do or don't want to do during labor and that the hospital is the same way. She mentioned how well-liked the prenatal nurses are at this hospital. She said that they like for you to meet with each of the midwives and both of the doctors at least once. Since we only have about six more visits before Baby Schrades arrives, we'll only get to meet most of them once...but today we got introduced to another midwife named Jill in the hallway, so hopefully we'll get to casually meet them all a couple of times.

The next thing we did was measure my belly and listen to the h/b. She said the belly was on target and the h/b was too, but we forgot to ask for the exact rate. My b/p was 115/75, which is higher than the usual 100/60, but she said that it was probably due to being in a new place and wasn't concerned. I'll keep an eye on that though...

Lastly they had a lady meet with us to go over what our insurance policy covers. We thought this was nice that they want to make sure we're aware and comfortable with everything. We found out that Baby Schrades will cost about $8,000 to deliver ($3,000 for doctor and $5,000 for hospital)....thank goodness for insurance.

Our next appointment is 2/22 with Jill....

Bradley Birth - Class #6

Last night's class was on Transition and the Second Stage of Labor, or the pushing stage. We opened the class by each of writing down five things that we thought that our partner had done well in preparing for the birth and one thing that they needed to improve on. Jeff gave me a list of compliments, and then told me that I needed to work on relaxing. I totally agree - I kind of have that feeling you have right before your wedding or other big event....like you just aren't ready so you can't sit still for one minute. I told Jeff that he needed to work on expanding out list of baby names. We have narrowed down our list but both say that we want to look through the books one more time before committing to anything.

The coach's tip was to take the labor one contraction at a time. I guess sometimes you can talk yourself into getting stressed out because the current pain is so bad that you convince yourself that the future pain has to be a lot worse...but it's not always true so no reason to worry about it.
Next week we talk about how to write a birth plan....

Busy Weekend

A busy weekend to me is having plans on one of the days! On Saturday we drove to Charlotte because I helped host a baby shower for my friend Erin, and Jeff played golf with Johnny and Dan (although they only got in 8 holes due to rain). After the shower we drove back to Raleigh to make some dinner plans that we had had scheduled for a while.

On Sunday we just did stuff around the house, which was nice. I think we are officially finished with the attic (we had one more inch of painting to do at the top of the stairwell). I ran errands and bought a lot of stuff for the baby's room...and will probably take a lot back, knowing me. Decorating a room is fun, but the trips to and from stores to get just the right stuff is tiring....and I never get it right on the first try.

We bought some paint for the baby's room, but neither one of us like it, so I think we'll wait until the bedding arrives and match the colors then. Right now the colors we are thinking of are browns and light blues.

Since we're changing midwives (and scales) I started weighing myself every Monday morning at the same time. For the past few weeks I've gained a pound a week. As of today I've gained 22. This puts me on track to gain 31.....exactly what my mom gained with me.

Misc Updates

Bella Band
I still think this little piece of elastic was the best $25 spent during pregnancy. Now I'm wearing it because some shirts are riding up and showing my belly.

Tyson
Our little guy has been very clingy lately. He used to sit on the ottoman at night if we were watching t.v., but now he has to get right in the middle of us or in one of our laps. When we are eating at the table he usually jumps up in our lap (like a cat) and curls into a little ball. We wonder if he senses change coming....

Leg Cramps
Warning to pregnant women - don't point your toes when you stretch your legs! You'll get a cramp that hurts so bad for a few minutes and then is usually sore for a few days afterwards.

Snoogle Body Pillow
Hmmm, this item is tied with the Bella Band. The pillow feels great between your knees and behind your back. Even non-pregnant folks would like it.

Movement
I was worried that the baby hadn't moved as much in the past few days, so I tracked it for 2 hours yesterday. I noticed 65 little movements, so I'm not worried anymore.

Jeff
The other day I asked Jeff to see if he could hear the baby's h/b by putting his ear to my belly. When he put his ear next to my belly Baby Schrades kicked him in the head :-)

Heavy
My belly feels heavy. Baby Schrades should weigh only about 3lbs. It's kind of scary to think how heavy it will feel when he weighs 6 or 7 lbs.

New Practice

Baby Schrades now has a place to be born.....Jeff and I were accepted into the new group of midwives and doctors that I mentioned earlier. We've learned that this group is similar to places friends in Atlanta have gone to. There are four midwives and three doctors, but the midwives do all of the low risk deliveries and the doctors are only called upon if needed. We'll deliver at a different hospital, but a friend this morning told me that she delivered there and felt like she was at the Embassy Suites (yippee!). Our first appointment is next Wednesday.....
